Majority of the colleges across the US use Common App while colleges in California use UCA. There are other application portals like ApplyTexas too.

As part of the application process you need to take the SAT or ACT test, get letter of recommendations from your teachers as well as write essays. The essays form a critical part of the application and you need to present yourself in a creative way.

Profile Building

US universities have been receiving increasing number of applications each year, and the disparity in grades and SAT/ACT scores of applicants is only decreasing. With the thinning academic gaps between applications, it is only natural that Admissions Officers now give considerable weightage to an applicant’s overall academic and co-curricular profile spanning at least a couple of years.

Colleges in the US look for well rounded students. It is, therefore, advisable to identify your strengths and start building your co-curricular profile as early as in high school in order to highlight your achievements overtime. An early start will help add more credibility to your profile. A great profile will also help substantiate your essays making them more impressive.

How We Help You

Stand Out Factor Identification & Cultivation

We will have a series of chat sessions with you to identify your strengths and determine the ones that would most likely stand out from other applicants. We call it your ‘Stand Out Factor’. The mentors then assist you in planning projects and internships to get you more experience in your intended major and a better chance to gain acceptance in your school of choice.

IMPAACT Programmes

College admissions are no longer dependent on just high grades. With COHESION, you can work together on a project of your choice, meet other highly motivated students and explore their academic interests to lead a project. Some of our students have organized hackathons, competitions, and community events in order to serve a need in their community and build social entrepreneurship skills.

College Shortlisting

Every college has its own "personality", which sometimes translates to unique application processes or criteria. Since colleges want students who share their values and will help build their reputation in the world, it’s important that you assess your "fit" with a college before including it in your shortlist.

Hence the college shortlisting process is more than just selecting them based on ranks. The process entails identifying your strengths and weaknesses, career ambitions, choice of major, preferences in living style and overall college experience, and finding colleges that match these needs.

How We Help You

A Tailored College Shortlist

We want you to attend a college where you will thrive and evolve to the best of your capabilities. In a series of sessions with our mentors, you will be matched with colleges best suited for your academic interests, desired college experience, and career aspirations. We will also work with you to craft a Dream\Match\Safe as well as an EA\ED\RD application strategy for you.

Detailed College Profiles

We have gathered all the information - test requirements, what the college looks for in your application, scholarship and financial aid, life at the college and much more for over 250 colleges to help you make an informed decision. You can also bookmark colleges you wish to apply to and share that with your mentor. Your mentor will then be able to guide you in making the right decision.

Essay Ideation & Editing

Essays are the backbone of your application. They give life to your transcripts and certificates. No matter how good your grades or how perfect your test scores, if your essays fail to highlight your ‘stand out factor’ adequately, your application will get thrown into the ‘meh’ bunch. A strong essay convinces the admissions officer that you are different from the rest of the applicants and that you will bring value to the university.

Each US university has it’s own requirement and they may need you to respond to two to three essay questions unique to that university with a particular word length. There are generally three types of essays: the "you", the "why us" and the "creative" essay. It’s very important you write about yourself, showcase your best qualities and show what’s unique about you. If your grades or scores are not great, essays are your chance to outshine others and get back in the game.

How We Help You

Ideation, Reviews & Edits

We will help you identify which life experiences to highlight and work with you to find that "Stand Out Factor". We will work with you from essay ideation to your final draft, thoroughly reviewing each and every draft. All of our mentors will read over and provid edits for each college essay!

Example Common App Essay on Shoes

Summary: The essay centers on the student’s black shoes she wore to school for five years, even after her feet had grown too big. She discusses her annoyance with uniformity, angered at the uniform and shoes she was forced to wear. However, these shoes were also the pride of her parents. After immigrating, they were able to buy these shoes for her and enroll her in the local school. Both these conflicting parts of her identity lead her to desire to to walk in someone else’s shoes, to work hard like her parents and leave the mold created by her schooling.

Analysis: This essay was written creatively, ending with a listing for her shoes as priceless. She shows an elevated level of writing and reflects on her upbringing and values through a seemingly mundane object.

Example Common App Essay on Hospice

Summary: This student recounts her experience volunteering at a hospice. Her essay opens when she is in a van surrounded with those who are dying. She is nervous and processes her thoughts. She remembers a photo taken of her friend on the last day of his life. He died suddenly at 20 years old, and her life changed after that, overcome with the desire to live her life for others. She returns to reality, and her essay focuses on in her small interactions with those around her. The essay ends with her walking one of the old men back up to the hospice. He farts in the elevator and becomes embarrassed, but she smiles and does her best to make him feel comfortable.

Analysis: The essay recounted a turning point in her life in a creative and compelling manner. However the essay did not just stop there; she revealed the actions she took to live differently, to encounter life in the small moments and to care for others not given her opportunity to live fully. Her values and personality were evident throughout her writing.

SAT & ACT Prepration

The SAT\ACT tests are to assess your academic readiness for college. They test your competence on reading, writing and mathematics. You have to take either one of these tests as part of your application process. Conventionally, SAT was the preferred test for most US Universities. But for the past decade or so, ACT has gradually gained ground and is becoming the popular choice with a majority of US universities.

This switch was primarily because, compared to the much simpler and straightforward ACTs, SAT started being deemed as confusing, tricky and obscure. However, SAT in now undergoing a major revamp, with the new SAT format going into effect in March 2016. The New SATs will be very similar to ACTs, but will still retain some of its old character. So which test should you be taking – ACT or SAT?

Interview Prepration

Some colleges require interviews as a final round before acceptance, many don’t require you to take interviews, and a few merely ‘suggest’ that you take an interview. However, an interview can be a great opportunity for you to meet with a university representative, showcase your personality and get your questions answered, if any.

Many interviews aren’t really treated as ‘interviews’ but more as casual chats to get to know you as a person and check if you would be a good ‘fit’. An interview can be conducted either over a video call or you will meet someone from the admissions office or an alumni from the college, in your own city.

How We Help You

Unlimited Mock Interviews

If you have interviews, our mentors will conduct as many mock interviews as you need to perfect your body language and your presentation skills to communicate your achievements.

Scholarship & Financial Aid

College education in the US is very expensive! Tuition, accommodation and board could cost you anywhere between $15,000 to $40,000. Students often ask, “If I can’t afford that much, is it even worth applying for”? Are there scholarships or aid available to cover the cost? Yes there are! And it is worth it! You need to plan your finances and you need to know how and when to apply for the right scholarships and aids. Top colleges frequently offer financial aid to needy students.

Financial Aid is intended to help students pay college fees, living expenses such as dorm/housing etc., transportation, books, and supplies for study. A ‘scholarship’ is often used interchangeably with ‘financial aid’, although grants and student loans are also major components of financial aid packages. Scholarship, on the other hand, is given on the basis of qualifications, special artistic or athletic ability, agreeing to follow a particular career path, ethnic origins etc.

How We Help You

Monetary Needs Identification

There are numerous options for financial aid or scholarships, and our mentors will work with you to identify the best schools and packages that fit your monetary requirements.

Letters of Recommendation

The US admissions landscape has become extremely competitive over the years. Hence, Letters of Recommendation (LORs), in addition to your co curricular profile, hold substantial weightage in the admissions decision. An impressive profile will allow you to draft solid essays, but that’s self-advocacy.

A LOR, on the other hand, gets you external acclaim for your character, achievements and capabilities. A well-written LOR will not just support you, but rave about you with stories and anecdotes whenever possible. Essays and LORs are what give your application a unique character.

How We Help You

Teacher\Counselor Identification

We will formulate an application strategy for each school, and with our in-depth knowledge of the system, we will help you identify whom to approach for an impactful LOR in line with the application strategy. We will also try and guide your teacher/recommender on how to best structure and word the letter in order to elevate your application above others.
